How to Trump-Sync and Save Democracy

Sarah Cooper

Stuck inside for so much of the year, we've each found out ways to pass the time and entertain ourselves. So goes the story of Sarah Cooper, a New York City comedian with nowhere to perform during shut-down, who didn't just didn't just scroll social media during 2020 like the rest of us -- she defined it. She perfected her lip-syncing skills, honed a caricature of President Donald Trump, and mastered TikTok. From there, she went completely and utterly viral. In fact, Cooper has become the face of our collective exasperation resulting from President Trump's many nonsensical speeches, from COVID-19 insights to phrases like: "person woman man camera TV", and so on.

How To Climate Change

Officially surpassing internet stardom, Cooper has partaken in the Democratic National Convention, guest-hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live, appeared on The Tonight Show and Ellen, been interviewed on a number of news outlets, and held Instagram Live conversations with the likes of Vice Presidential candidate, Kamala Harris. Cooper has even landed a forthcoming Netflix special.

"'How to Medical,' the first video of Cooper's pandemic-inspired Trump-synced series, has over 25 million views across all platforms. It also demonstrates Cooper's ability to capture each nuance of the President's speech patterns and allows the absurdity of his statements to speak for themselves."

How to Medical, the first video of Cooper's pandemic-inspired Trump-synced series, has over 25 million views across all platforms. It also demonstrates Cooper's ability to capture each nuance of the President's speech patterns and allows the absurdity of his statements to speak for themselves. From his awkward pauses to his "ums" and "uhs" -- Cooper makes obvious just how malformed so many of his statements are, how he fumbles for words, and his undeniable sense of self-satisfaction when he thinks he's said something right. In this way, the comedian uses Trump himself to demonstrate his own misguided leadership and the threat he poses to American democracy and values.

Among Cooper's growing fanbase is World War Zero Co-Founder, Secretary John Kerry -- who reached out to the comedian this summer to ask her if she'd consider making a video specific to climate change. She agreed and with some remorse, Cooper named the WW0 collab How to Climate Change. All said, the result is proof that sometimes humor can be the best way to raise awareness about a topic as serious as climate change.

"Even the titles of Cooper's books reflect the comedian's fascination with unveiling truth and confronting BS."

Going viral isn't new to Sarah Cooper. In 2014, Cooper's blog post 10 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings received 5 million views. This prompted her to leave her desk job at Google so she could write and perform comedy full-time. Since then, she's authored three books, entitled: 100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings, Draw What Success Looks like, and How to be Successful without Hurting Men's Feelings.

Even the titles of Cooper's books reflect the comedian's fascination with unveiling truth and confronting BS. It's the foundation upon which she builds her comedy, and it's what makes her stand out in comparison to more overt and excessive impressions of the President.

"In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Cooper explains how her Trump-syncing was born from her frustrations with the daily Coronavirus briefings and listening to Trump 'BS'ing his way through the presidency.'"

In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Cooper explains how her Trump-syncing was born from her frustrations with the daily Coronavirus briefings and listening to Trump "BS'ing his way through the presidency." Cooper goes on to explain that she aims for the videos to point out the subtext of what Trump is saying -- which seems to be -- not much.

What makes Cooper standout is that she's helping people pay attention. And it's not just what has made her famous -- it's what makes her work so very important, especially right now. On Instagram Live -- Kamala Harris and Cooper discussed how the public has become accustomed to Trump's rhetoric and how it's become an unfortunate norm. Harris goes on to commend Cooper for her "brilliance" and timing in releasing her videos, stating "everybody needed a little jolt to remember this is not normal, and this is not right, and wait -- this is crazy talk. So, you know, you kicked in with that brilliant idea at just the right moment to remind people to listen to what the guy is saying."

"What makes Cooper standout is that she's helping people pay attention. And it's not just what has made her famous -- it's what makes her work so very important ... to expose just how preposterous a President like Trump can be..."

And doesn't it seem fitting that it would take a comedian's sharp sense of irony and understanding of absurdity to expose just how preposterous a President like Trump can be?

While 2020 has been a mixed bag, it has resulted in a lot of newfound passions and sharpened skills for many. At the very least, it's brought us closer together with Sarah Cooper, who not only found a way to keep performing comedy, but became an active voice in preserving democracy, promoting change, and now in fighting climate denial.
